Quick Takes: The Most Fabulous Story Ever Told

Trust the author of Jeffrey and Valhalla to turn the creation story and the human history that follows into a rich tapestry of serio-comic possibilities, by turns touching, hilarious, outrageous and always provocative. Director Christina Hanson keeps the high energy ups and downs of Rudnick's alternative version of Genesis and other bible stories fast-paced and affecting. Albert M. Chan as Adam, and particularly Jason Fenton as Steve, bring a convincing repertoire of desires, dreams, fears, and frustrations to their characters' respective evolving personalities and fortunes. Robin Rapoport has the right quirkiness as Mabel, but Christine Power is a standout as her religiously skeptical, emotionally tougher and always intriguing life partner. Encore Theater Company bears watching as an adventurous company with great promise.
